Howell’s Violet Viola howellii
Thirty years ago, this enigmatic violet was known from a dozen sites on Vancouver Island. Today most of those are no longer viable, due in part to successional changes in the environment and the plant’s own ephemeral nature. It is known on Salt Spring Island from a collection made in the seventies on the north end. Recognized from early blue violet by the short hairs that fringe the sepals. Flowering in May.
