Tax Benefits of Land Donations: The Conservancy can provide a charitible tax receipt to a donor of land, once the donor completes an appraisal of the land’s worth. Under the federal Ecological Gifts Program, there are additional income tax incentives for donating ecologically valuable land. Donors are also relieved of capital gains tax on the property and receive a charitable donation receipt that can be applied over 10 years to offset their income taxes.
A special subdivision policy for land in the Islands Trust area makes it possible for landowners to subdivide a property so that they can donate an ecologically valuable portion of their land to a land conservancy.
U.S. Taxpayers: You can also gain the same tax benefits from donations of Canadian land or covenants through the American Friends of Canadian Land Trusts. The Conservancy is a qualified recipient for land donations under this program.
In some cases, the Conservancy may consider purchasing ecologically sensitive land. Please call our office to make an appointment with our Executive Director to discuss your plans and options.
