Habitat Stewardship Program at Salt Spring Island Conservancy
Since 2004, we have received federal funding to protect wildlife habitat on Salt Spring Island from the Government of Canada’s Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk. This work is urgent because Salt Spring Island is in the Coastal Douglas-Fir biogeoclimatic zone–the rarest ecosystem in the province with the highest number of rare and endangered plants and wildlife. Over 100 provincially and federally listed Species at Risk are known to occur on Salt Spring Island.
As part of our project, we:
monitor and map rare and endangered animals and plants on the island
educate the public about the species found on the island
work with landowners to provide training on managing and restoring wildlife habitat
provide information to landowners concerned about protecting their land
