Least Reindeer Cladina ciliata

Among the jumble of cladonia lichens at Ruckle Park, this is the one you’re likely to see the least. Gray reindeer (C. rangiferina) has the same unidirectional combed appearance as its rare relative, but more abruptly so. Least reindeer has a more delicate profile with the terminal branches mostly forking in pairs. Maritime reindeer (C. portentosa), the most common, has branches that go in all directions.
