Protecting and enhancing the natural values of Salt Spring Island and its surrounding waters

Black-tailed Deer

Black-tailed Deer Odocoileus hemionus

These coastal deer browse on trees and shrubs and graze on grasses, forbs, and lichens.. Deer browsing on Salt Spring and the other small islands in the Salish Sea is a big problem for recovery of rare flowering plants. Lack of predation and limited hunting has contributed to an overpopulation of deer on all the islands.

Deer breed from November to December, and then young, often twins, are usually born in late May and June.
