Protecting and enhancing the natural values of Salt Spring Island and its surrounding waters

Beaver Castor canadensis

The North American Beaver is the second largest rodent in the world. There were once estimated to be more than 60 million beavers in the world, but their population has been reduced to 6-12 million. Once hunted for their thick furs, beavers are now protected in Canada by the Wildlife Act. Beavers are natural engineers, changing their environment by their active damming and lodge-building.
